Fishes: East Pacific 3.0.1

An identification guide for the shore-fish fauna of the Tropical Eastern Pacific. This application is the first of a set of two portable identification guides for Apple touch-screen devices that will encompass the shore-fish populations of the tropical American marine regions on both sides of the Central American Isthmus: the Tropical Eastern Pacific and the Greater Caribbean (Caribbean and adjacent areas).

This application was adapted from the website "Shorefishes of the Tropical Eastern Pacific: Online Information System" from 2008 (www.stri.org/sftep), which, in turn, originated from a CD system in 2002 that was based on English (1994) and Spanish (1998) book editions.

This standalone application operates without internet connectivity.

• Complete interfaces available in English and Spanish. Access the Spanish interface by selecting Spanish in your device's language preferences.
• Covers 1,358 species; includes over 5,000 images to aid identification. Users can choose to explore the entire fauna or focus on the Diver Group, a subset of 686 species found within SCUBA diving depths on or adjacent to reefs in various parts of the region.
• Each species page features a comprehensive description (covering form, color, size, habitat, and depth range), one or more species images (mainly photographs), key distinguishing features from similar species, a link to pages showing related species, and a regional range map.
• Browse through alphabetical lists of species and species within families, with sorting available based on scientific or common names (first or last).
• A search engine allows users to identify fishes using combinations of generic common names, location, habitat, and fish characteristics (shape, color pattern, and colors).
• A scientific terms glossary provided links to each species page.
• Keys utilizing a series of feature-based "either/or" choices enable the identification of members of two species-rich families.
• The notebook module enables users to review recently visited species pages and create lists detailing observations about fishes. Users can generate new lists from scratch or by duplicating existing ones. Lists are stored in folders and can be shared via email.
• The iPad version includes glossary images and high-resolution range maps displaying site records as dots.
• New features in this version include the option to explore either the entire fauna or a diver subgroup; addition of 63 more species and almost 40% more images; and habitat search capability in the fish ID search engine.
